June 23 ~ Ride Day 7
Shiloh to Cuba Landing
We left the Pilgrim House just after 7am; somewhat on time. From Memphis we had to drive to Decaturville, TN to start the back on the route. This cut out about 70 miles but allowed us to stay on schedule. We have to use the "Safe Houses" that are available to us and sometimes they are out of the way.
We arrived at our departure site to begin our ride to Cuba Landing, taking back roads and windy turns. Among the many twists and turns we made a stop in the driveway of a helpful man and his two sons, one who's name was Ricky. The view was uneventful trees and brush. Each residential section we came thru we prepared for dog's to run out from under anything that would provide shelter. Occasionally, one would offer us the surprise we were looking for and gave bark but fortunately, not chase.
With the directions given to us by Ricky's dad we continue on trying to make sense of the road name changes with the map provided by Adventure Cycling. Not their fault, just the way it is. Kids around these parts, I'm told by a gentleman who also assisted us, take the signs for their bedrooms. He's also the gentleman who had a large flowing Confederate flag flying in his yard. The Youth Cyclists were reluctant to approach the man, but after they saw me shake his hand were assured that he meant no one harm. hehe. He was very helpful with detailed mile and turn directions on how to get to Cuba Landing.
We arrived at Tennessee River Mountain Getaway on Cuba Landing Rd. and was welcomed by Phil, the proprietor. While this was the first time we had to pay for a place to sleep it was worth it as it was last minute and Phil cut us a break. He supplied us with three cabins. Mahlique, Ibn and Marshall decided to bunk with me for whatever reason. It could be the fact that I had the WiFi and while I was away the cabin became party central for the boys.
