Kyvon Gainesville, AL June 18

Kyvon - Gainesville, AL 6/18

After a long, hot ride to Gainesville and being chased by several dogs, we arrived to massive cheering and music. It seemed like everyone in the town  came up to us and asked our names. We met Mayor Fulghum, she is the first African American female to be mayor of this town.  When we came into the new building (the town hall) we were given water and met several important people from surrounding towns, like the Mayor of Epes, the police chief, a college group called NAPS, and Professor Queeny.

They had a full program planned for us and started right away. The program started with a christian musical selection, then we were given a greeting by the mayor, the volunteer fire chief, and a couple more. The NAPS group sung for us again. They were great!  Afterwards, they performed a  dramatization of an African man being taken away from his mother, and then sent to america to become a slave.  He decided to escape and when he finally made it he is able to have a normal life. We learned the song "Wade in the Water".

A really nice women from the town took us on a tour across the town in a horse drawn carriage.  She gave us background history on the homes in the town that were recently remodeled to look the same as how it did when it was built. During the whole tour, a goat named Billy was following both of the horses, and stayed with the carriage the whole time.  He was walking freely right along side us.

When we came back to the building, we all got to eat, and while we were eating, the group of NAPS came over and asked us a lot of questions about SnR, and after we answered their questions, they gave us some information on their group.  It was neat meeting up with college kids doing great things in small communities like this.  They were very proud of us and could not believe we were high school students.
